Cracked Bass Bow

When this German made bow came into our workshop for a re-hair, the owner had not even noticed the crack!

We started the repair by cleaning the crack with a simple solution of oxalic acid.  This will clean any oils that would prevent a lasting glue joint form occurring.  Once the crack is clean and dry, hide glue is wicked into the crack with a camp, ensuring good penetration of glue.  The crack is then clamped and left to dry for 24 hours. Once dry, the crack is leveled and any remaining low points are filled with shellac.  The bow is finally French polished and ready to be re-haired.

Wide open... Cleaning with oxalic acid...using a clamp to wick the liquid into the deepest parts of the crack... Clamped and ready to dry... Good as new!
